Japan's top goalkeeper demonstrated his knack for languages after putting pen to paper with the Belgian veterans before taking part in a practice match against Mallorca
The 29-year-old joined the Belgian veterans after a two-year spell at Lierse, where he was twice voted as the club's Most Valuable Player by supporters and wore the captain's armband in the 2010-2011 season.
"I'm happy that I joined the club and want to win something big," Kawashima said in French following an English question-and-answer session. "I want to use what my experience at Lierse to work hard as a member of Standard."
After speaking to Japanese reporters in his native language, the former Kawasaki Frontale man was quickly pressed into service, coming off the bench to protect his new team's 1-0 win over Mallorca in a practice match. He showed off his linguistic prowess on the pitch as well, giving instructions to team-mates in both English and French.
"I felt like I was able to do well," Kawashima told reporters after the session. "It was a good start."
