Egypt’s Al Ahly outplayed continental champions Esperance Tunis 2-1 on Saturday in Rades to win their seventh Caf Champions League title, consolidating their unbeaten record as the most successful African club.

The Red Devils were held at home to a 1-1 draw by the Blood & Gold in the first leg, prompting many pundits to tip the Tunisians as highly favoured to carry off the return fixture, but Nabil Maaloul’s men failed to live up to expectation as they appeared torpid against a more composed and forceful Ahly during much of the encounter witnessed by some 30,000 local supporters.

Conscious of Esperance’s away goal advantage, the visitors went on the offensive at the blast of the whistle, with Gedo and Soliman cleverly set up to conclude a fine onslaught after 11 minutes, but their effort was thwarted by the Tunisian goalkeeper Ben Cherifia, who lunged forward to parry the shot.

Another goal opportunity fell to the duo in the 19th minute after they outstripped two defenders to retain control of the ball in the box, but Cherifa intervened once again to clear the danger, which he repeated moments before the half hour mark when Ghaly and Hamdi’s goalmouth collaboration nearly came to fruition.

Yannick N'Djeng could have opened the scoring for Esperance in the 35th minute, but the Cameroonian striker, after shaking off a grip from a defender, failed to put his effort over onrushing Ahly keeper Sherif Ekramy.

Two minutes before half time, the Egyptians broke the deadlock through Gedo, who drifted into the hosts’ area and unleashed home his effort before Esperance defenders could crowd him out.

The Tunisians opened the second half with better passes and defending but faulting with sloppy finishing, as Njeng fluffed two clear chances in the 57th and 59th minutes when he found himself facing the Egyptian keeper and failing to put his strikes through.

Gedo had a chance to notch his brace immediately after, but blew his shot wide off the post. Moments later, Ben Mansour opened for Soliman, who dropped deep and outpaced a defender before blasting in to increase Ahly’s lead to 2-0 by the 64th minute.

In a bid to maintain their ascendancy, coach Hossam El-Badry brought in Ahly star Mohamed Aboutreika, but despite that, the tide turned Esperance's way thereafter as they came close to scoring twice during the last quarter of the clash, which eventually came through in the 84th minute through Njeng, who slipped his effort into an open net after connecting a pass from the right flank and beating the keeper, to revive hopes for the frustrated fans, who were already departing the stadium.

A late minute penalty for Ahly could have put the game to bed but Aboutreika’s spot kick was deflected by Cherifia, who could not stop congratulating himself for a satisfactory outing despite his side’s final 2-1 loss to the Egyptians, who will be representing Africa next month in the Fifa Club World Cup tournament in Japan.
