China 1-1 Ghana: Boakye Yiadom strikes on debut as Black Stars draw with the Dragons

The striker of the Old Lady helped his west African side to pull level with the Dragons at the Shanxi Province Stadium

Juventus striker Richmond Boakye Yiadom scored on his debut in Ghana’s international friendly match against China at the Shanxi Province Stadium in Xi’an. The match ended 1-1 with the Chinese taking the lead from the spot.

The host nation could have even won the match if they had managed to convert a clear opportunity into goal, but substitute goalkeeper Ernest Sowah was at the right place at the right time to protect his post.

Yiadom who came on for in-form Emmanuel Clottey took little time to prove his worth to the technical handlers after converting a Kwadwo Asamoah corner.

The first half passed without many events with both teams enjoying an even share of possession.
Both teams were expertly kept out by the opposition defenders with Anthony Annan and John Mensah proving valuable aids to Ghana’s goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey.

Black Stars coach Akwesi Appiah started four debutants and also walked captain John Mensah straight into the starting 11 after he missed Ghana’s last two World Cup qualifiers.

But the former Lyon defender who is unattached limped off as his injury worries loomed again, but he managed to come back on for the second half.

The match witnessed the return of Asamoah Gyan to the squad although he did not get on the field. He made a return after his self imposed exile following severe public backlash over his unsatisfactory performance at the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea six months ago.

Also, leading scorer of the Caf Champions League Clottey finally had the chance to start a Black Stars game.

The match afforded coach Appiah the chance to continue with his assessment of the players before next month’s 2013 Afcon qualifier against Malawi.
