Live Commentary

  • So Dortmund begin 2013 in perfect style: Reus, Gotze, Santana, Lewandowski and Blaszczykowski all on the scoresheet, as Nuri Sahin returns to Bundesliga action. In truth, 5-0 is a little harsh on the hosts, who battled well for the first 70 minutes or so, but constantly lacked a cutting edge up front. The champions have thrown - nay, hurled - down the gauntlet to Bayern Munich - they won't give up this title without a fight! Thanks for joining me tonight - enjoy your evenings, everyone!
  • 90'
Hunt works infield to De Bruyne, who fires wide with his left foot from 20 yards - and that's it for tonight! What a result for the champions!
  • 89'
Even Mats Hummels is getting in on the act. The defender charges forward once more and combines with Lewandowski, but his snap shot under pressure bobbles safely through to the keeper. Real confident stuff from the visitors now - exactly the start to 2013 Jurgen Klopp would have wanted.
  • 87'
In all honesty, the scoreline is a little flattering - Dortmund have been clinical this half, but Bremen don't deserve a drumming after their efforts for the majority of the match. Question marks will be raised over goalkeeper Mielitz tonight, who has not enjoyed the best of evenings.
  • 85'
    Assist Lukasz Piszczek
  • 85'
    Goal Jakub Blaszczykowski
GOAL!!!!!! Five goals from five-star Dortmund! Gundogan finds Piszczek with the freedom of the right flank, and he drives for the box before squaring for compatriot Blaszczykowski, who turns his man and fires high into the net. What a night for Dortmund!
  • 84'
    SubstitutionSebastian Kehl Nuri Sahin
  • 84'
The prodigal son returns! Nuri Sahin takes to the field for the closing stages, and the Dortmund faithful make just about as much noise as they have at any point tonight. And they've been loud.
  • 83'
Santana blocks Hunt's shot with his face inside the box, but it seems as though the mask has done it's work - he's OK. Santana has performed very well in the absence of Neven Subotic tonight.
  • 81'
    Assist Lukasz Piszczek
  • 81'
    Goal Robert Lewandowski
GOAL!!!!!! And that's the fourth!! Superb footwork from Gundogan as he wriggles into the box. The ball breaks wide for Piszczek, and his cross is perfectly placed across the goal for Lewandowski to tap home. Not a great moment for Mielitz, that.
  • 78'
    SubstitutionEljero Elia Aleksandar Ignjovski
  • 78'
Bremen make their final change, with a frustrated-looking Elia making way for Serbia international Aleksandar Ignjovski. The substitute tries his luck with his first touch, but the ball was bobbling as he hit it, and that won't worry Weidenfeller.
  • 76'
    SubstitutionMario Götze Sven Bender
  • 76'
End of the night for Mario Gotze, as Sven Bender comes on for the final stages. Gotze's on a yellow card, so that's probably sensible, but I'm sure the travelling support may have liked to see Nuri Sahin take to the field... One sub to go, so he could yet feature.
  • 74'
Patient play from the hosts allows Elia time on the left, and his cross is blocked behind by Piszczek. De Bruyne's delivery is ballooned to the far corner, and Dortmund win it back through Blaszczykowski.
  • 71'
    SubstitutionMarco Reus Jakub Blaszczykowski
  • 71'
Really promising run from Reus is halted by Junuzovic's trip. Another change for Bremen - Petersen's race is run, and he is replaced by Joseph Akpala, while Marco Reus makes way for Jakub Blaszczykowski.
  • 70'
    SubstitutionNils Petersen Joseph Akpala
  • 69'
Gotze spins his man superbly and finds Lewandowski, but the flag is up on the near side. Not a difficult spot for the assistant there. Dortmund come again with Reus but Elia tracks back well.
  • 67'
Petersen has worked hard tonight, but it's a thankless task for him up front. Hunt and Elia have struggled to support him this half, and he's been left chasing shadows for the most part since the break.
  • 65'
Oh, what a chance for Gundogan! Piszczek's ball is brought down by Lewandowski and slipped on to Gotze. His run is halted and the ball falls to Gundogan 20 yards out, but he fires clean over the crossbar. Good chance for 4-0 there.
  • 62'
That might just be the spark that Bremen need - they've livened up a little now, and are forcing Dortmund back into their own half with some sustained possession. A long way back, but just one goal could do it... Petersen meets another cut-back and forces another corner, which Weidenfeller punches clear.
  • 59'
Brilliant save from Weidenfeller! A cross from the left is headed goalwards superbly by Petersen from the edge of the area, and the keeper tips over well from the middle of the goal. A corner ensues, and he grasps it with ease.
  • 57'
Schmelzer floats in a free-kick but it's a comfortable take for Mielitz. Bremen look to launch a quick counter but it sails out of play and Hummels can restart play for the visitors.
  • 54'
    SubstitutionSebastian Prödl Özkan Yildirim
  • 54'
Gotze plays a delightful ball to Lewandowski, but a superb last-ditch tackle from Socratis denies him room in the box. Bremen go down the other end and Petersen finds space to charge into the box from the right, but he blazes over. Change coming here - OzkanYildirim is in for his Bundesliga debut for Bremen, in place of Sebastian Prodl.
  • 51'
This is all looking a little easy for Dortmund now. They're keeping the ball better than Bremen and the away support is in full voice. The hosts need something here - and they need it quickly. Gotze leads a counter-attack and tries to play in Lewandowski but his pass it overhit, and Bremen survive.
  • 48'
    Assist Marco Reus
  • 48'
    Goal Felipe Santana
GOAL!!! Santana makes it 3-0!!! The masked man steals in ahead of Petersen and heads home off the far post. Simple as you like for the visitors, and that might just be it for Bremen.
  • 47'
Grosskreutz blasts it towards the far post, but it curls just wide. Dortmund come again from the restart, however, and Gotze wins a corner after Hummels' strong run.
  • 46'
Lewandowski spins on the edge of the box following Schmelzer's long-ball, but he's hauled back and wins the free-kick. Dangerous territory this from 20 yards - five players currently over the ball...
  • 46'
    Dortmund get us back underway...
  • Nuri Sahin has been warming up during the interval - might he make his Bundesliga comeback tonight? We'll find out soon - here come the teams again!
  • So what are you expecting in the second half? Can Bremen muster a comeback of some kind, or are BVB cruising to a win here? @JoeWright004 with your thoughts, if you please...
  • So it's Werder Bremen 0-2 Borussia Dortmund at the break, with goals from Marco Reus and Mario Gotze putting the visitors in control of the match. Bremen have been industrious but have failed to threaten Weidenfeller's goal, with Marko Arnautovic's absence keenly felt in the final third. Dortmund, meanwhile, could have scored a couple more, but as it stands, the match is still (somewhat) in the balance.
  • 45'
Hummels - no! Another free-kick from the right finds its way to the feet of the defender, and he turns clear inside the area, but opts to square towards Reus rather than shoot himself and the danger is cleared! Final act of the half, that, as the referee blows for the interval.
  • 44'
Chance for Dortmund there! An attack breaks down but Gundogan wins it back, and Gotze flicks to Reus, who tees up Lewandowski, but his attempts to beat his man forces him wide and the threat fizzles out. At the other end, Santana stretches and makes a crucial tackle to deny Petersen - get that wrong, and he could have seen yellow again.
  • 42'
Oh dear. Hunt curls it in left-footed, but it sails way beyond the crowd in the box and behind for a goal-kick. Bremen need half-time to regroup here, I think - this isn't beyond their grasp yet, but they must get the basics right.
  • 41'
Gundogan pulls back Petesen and Bremen have a free-kick in a promising position, 25 yards out, just to the right...
  • 40'
    Yellow Card Mario Götze
  • 40'
Gebre-Selassie charges forward again, but Dortmund win it back and launch a counter down the left. Gotze chases a long ball and looks to have flicked it over the head of the on-rushing Mielitz, but the referee blows up for handball and books the young attacker. Replays show that was the correct call - naughty stuff from Gotze!
  • 38'
    Yellow Card Felipe Santana
  • 38'
Dortmund win a free-kick wide on the right. Reus whips it in and Lewandowski meets it, but his header is way off target. Bremen then launch an attack and Santana trips De Bruyne near the centre circle, earning the first yellow card of the evening.
  • 36'
Junuzovic skips away from Reus but Dortmund win it back, and Gotze almost plays Lewandowski through, but the pass is just a little too heavy for the Poland striker. Some tremendous build-up from Dortmund follows as Schmelzer, Gotze and Lewandowski combine to release Piszczek, but his cross is charged down.
  • 33'
Gebre-Selassie looks to link up with Hunt again but Schmelzer clears. Petersen then tries to bundle his way past Hummels, but the defender just about does enough to deny him a route to goal. Weidenfeller back in possession now.
  • 30'
Half an hour gone here, and Dortmund are in control of this one. @yaxcharming says on Twitter: "Dortmund have started well but I can see Bremen getting a goal in this one as well." They'll need to find one soon, you'd think, but with Arnautovic suspended, it's looking like an uphill battle already...
  • 28'
Half a chance for Bremen... Hunt lays the ball off into the path of Gebre-Selassie, and his driven cross is scuffed across goal by Hummels, but with no attacker in support, Weidenfeller gathers comfortably.
  • 26'
Superb, confident play from the visitors. Hummels launches the ball over the top for Lewandowski, who nutmegs his man and gets the ball back from Gotze but has to settle for a corner. Schmelzer swings in a cross after the initial set piece is cleared and Hummels meets it, but it's straight at the keeper.
  • 24'
Elia wins a throw out on the left. De Bruyne works space for a cross but Santana clears under no pressure. The ball is sent back towards the Dortmund area but sails behind harmlessly for a goal-kick.
  • 22'
Mielitz can consider himself unlucky there - the deflection left him completely helpless from that kind of range. Bremen have scored in each of their last 11 matches, and they will need a goal here soon if they're to stop this match slipping away before half-time.
  • 19'
    Assist Kevin Großkreutz
  • 19'
    Goal Mario Götze
GOAL!!!! 2-0 to the champions!! Grosskreutz was picked out beautifully by Gundogan on the left. He slipped the ball across to Gotze, who let fly from 20 yards and the ball looped up off the shin of Gebre-Selassie and in off the crossbar!
  • 17'
Gundogan spreads the ball to Piszczek but the full-back is charged down and Prodl clears. Dortmund come again with Grosskreutz but the attack leads to nothing, and Bremen regain the ball.
  • 15'
CHANCE - cleared! Mario Gotze was played in behind by Kevin Grosskreutz on the counter-attack, and the 20-year-old lifted the ball over the on-rushing Mielitz only to see it hooked away from goal by the covering defender. Bremen survive.
  • 13'
It's all gone a bit scrappy in the middle of the park - the two packed midfields are finding space at a premium and neither side is retaining the ball too well. Bremen have it now, and look to work it through Aaron Hunt.
  • 11'
Bremen attempt to hit back immediately through Nils Petersen - the striker cuts in from the right and strikes for goal, but he can only drag his effort across the box and behind with Santana closing him down.
  • 9'
    Goal Marco Reus
GOAL!!!! Dortmund are in front! Lewandowski wins a free kick 25 yards out, and Marco Reus bends it up and over the wall and into the bottom right-hand corner. Super strike. The champions lead!
  • 8'
Reus' corner is comfortably gathered by Mielitz, and Bremen launch a quick counter-attack down the left-hand side. Elia runs at Piszczek to force a corner, which is headed away by Lewandowski.
  • 6'
Lewandowski was close to breaking through there, but Fritz did well to dispossess him. Schmelzer is released down the left flank and earns the first corner of the match.
  • 3'
Lively run from Elia but Piszczek stops him in his tracks. Elia tries again but his cross is blocked. Lively start from the hosts here.
  • 1'
    We're off and running!
  • The teams are out and ready to get us going...
  • So: predictions for tonight? Scoreline? Scorers? Key players? Let me know at @JoeWright004 on Twitter!
  • Bayern Munich secured a comfortable win against Greuther Furth earlier on today, so Dortmund will hope to keep pace with the leaders with a win tonight. To do so, they'll need to secure back-to-back wins at Weserstadion for the first time ever...
  • And the visitors Borussia Dortmund: Weidenfeller; Schmelzer, Hummels, Santana, Piszczek; Kehl, Gundogan; Grosskreutz, Gotze, Reus; Lewandowski. No Jakub Blaszczykowski for the champions this evening, while Kevin Grosskreutz starts alongside Mario Gotze and Marco Reus in support of Robert Lewandowski. Nuri Sahin is amongst the substitutes tonight.
  • Here's how the hosts line up this evening: Mielitz; Gebre Selassie, Prodl, Sokratis, Schmitz; Junuzovic; Hunt, Fritz, De Bruyne, Elia; Petersen. A big game for on-loan Kevin de Bruyne, you'd feel, as the on-loan Chelsea man faces a daunting midfield up against him tonight...
  • Good evening folks, and welcome to's live play-by-play coverage of Werder Bremen v Borussia Dortmund! The Bundesliga is back, and this evening's match looks to be an intriguing affair... Team news on the way!
