Ghana’s chances of progressing to the next stage of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers look bright after defeating Lesotho 0-2 in Maseru on Sunday.

Defender John Boye put the Black Stars in the lead in the first half before Al Ain striker Asamoah Gyan hammered the final nail on the coffin to move the 2010 World Cup quarter-finalists to the summit of Group D.

The four-time African champions have accumulated a total of 12 points followed by the Chipolopolo with 11 after a 1-1 draw game against Sudan on Saturday.

Both sides showed their intent from the start of the game as they both tried to get on the front foot from the start resulting in some pulsating end-to-end action in the first half, but neither team managed to find the breakthrough. Despite both sides managing to find ways to carve out the opposition defence,  the keepers saw little action despite the attacking mindset of the teams.

That was to change around the half hour mark though as Lesotho managed to force two saves in under a minute from Ghanaian goalkeeper Fatau Dauda. Ghana responded a few minutes later with a test of their own as Sulley Muntari forced Kuenane into a save from long range, but Ghana were unable to capitalise on the goalkeeper’s spill.

The deadlock was finally broken just before half-time as Boye managed to get his head onto a Muntari free kick and get the ball past Kuenane in the first minute of first half time added on, to give the Ghanaians a vital lead heading into the break.

The goal and the timing  seemed to give the Ghanaians confidence as they seemed assured from the start of the second half looking to gain a semblance of control in the game that neither team had managed in the first half with Kuenane having to make two crucial saves to prevent the Ghanaians from consolidating their lead early on. The Ghanaians dominating start did not last long, however, as the Crocodiles spurred by their fans so recovered to test the Ashgold keeper again as the game reverted to the end-to-end stuff seen in the first half.

Buoyed by their fans, Lesotho kept at it in the hopes of keeping their unbeaten home record in the qualifiers so far intact, but the Crocodiles were undone in the 83rd minute as Gyan sealed the win for the Black Stars with his third goal in two games.

Coach Kwesi Appiah’s side needs just a draw or a win against the 2012 Africa champions at home in September to book a place in the playoffs.
