Player Ratings: Paris Saint-Germain 1-1 Valenciennes

Carlo Ancelotti's men are still waiting on the league title following this draw and Goal was on hand to review each players' performance

By Robin Bairner

  • Nicolas Douchez

    Nicolas Douchez

Stepped in to replace the suspended Salvatore Sirigu and questions will be asked over his involvement in the opening goal as he failed to direct his parry from an Aboubakar shot intelligently.

  • Thiago Silva

    Thiago Silva

Dismissed by the referee just before half-time for a rather benign grab of his elbow. Until then this was another fine performance from the captain, who was their best defender until his red. Going forward he showed some skills, too, releasing Ibrahimovic with a magnificent long pass and flicking an effort just wide following a Van der Wiel free kick.

  • Mamadou Sakho

    2.00

    Mamadou Sakho

The local lad was drafted in to celebrate PSG’s greatest domestic achievement but this was to be an evening of disappointment. Looked nervous in the early stages but would go on to make a number of important blocks for his side.

  • Maxwell

    3.00

    Maxwell

Was repeatedly caught out by Danic down his flank in the early stages of the game. The Brazilian is normally a highly reliable player for PSG and he steadied himself after this concerning start. Did blast a volley just past the post in the first half.

  • Gregory van der Wiel
    1

    1.50

    Gregory van der Wiel

Booked in the first half for a rash challenge on Melikson that typified the nervous nature of the home side’s defending in the early stages of the match. Did reasonably well before being replaced midway through the second half.

  • Jérémy Menez
    1
    2
    1.50

    Jérémy Menez

The most enigmatic of players drifted in and out of the match but failed to produce the flashes of magic that he has mustered in recent weeks. Booked for a petulant foul towards the end of the first half as his frustration started to tell. Sacrificed once Silva was sent off.

  • Blaise Matuidi
    3
    0
    3.00

    Blaise Matuidi

Outnumbered in the centre of the field, the busy France international had his work cut out from the outset of this match. His industry was excellent but he could have done with a more imaginative partner alongside him.

  • Clément Chantôme
    1
    1
    2.50

    Clément Chantôme

Was the major benefactor of last weekend’s after-match fracas and stepped in due to the ensuing suspension of Beckham and Verratti. Looked very much up for the fight in the heart of the midfield but was harshly booked just prior to the break. Moved out to the right after the break and was a threat before being withdrawn.

  • Javier Pastore
    5
    2
    4.00

    Javier Pastore

Has come good in the closing weeks of the season and nearly gave his side an early lead with a fierce drive that was turned clear by Penneteau. Made a number of fine passes around the penalty box that threatened to open up the visitors.

  • Zlatan Ibrahimovic
    7
    1
    3.00

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Showed glorious skill to fashion a chance for himself after around quarter of an hour but was over elaborate with his flicked finish after getting the better of the goalkeeper. Was PSG's most persistent offensive threat and was unlucky not to score after the break.

  • Ezequiel Lavezzi
    1
    1
    3.00

    Ezequiel Lavezzi

Culpable of missing a great opportunity to quickly level the scores as he was thwarted by Penneteau when clean through. Displayed wonderful desire and reading of the game and it was only his finishing that really let him down.

    Alex

Came on in the immediate aftermath of Thiago Silva’s red card and looked hungry to make his mark on the game. Did just that by heading the equaliser.

  • Christophe Jallet

    Christophe Jallet

Introduced to add energy down the right in the final quarter of the match.

  • Kevin Gameiro

    Kevin Gameiro

Given the final 20 minutes as PSG tried to turn the game around.

  • Nicolas Penneteau

    Nicolas Penneteau

The Valenciennes goalkeeper made numerous fine saves when questions were asked of him. Tipped over from Pastore and then denied Lavezzi by getting from his line quickly. In the second period his best blocks came on Ibrahimovic and Alex, and he was left helpless with the goal he did leak.

  • Brou Benjamin Angoua

    2.50

    Brou Benjamin Angoua

Replaced the highly-rated Nicolas Isimat-Mirin in the centre of the northerners’ defence and though he struggled to cope with PSG’s movement, he did just enough to keep them at bay in the main. A determined showing.

  • Kenny Lala

    2.50

    Kenny Lala

At times looked a little bamboozled by Menez but was inevitably close enough to the winger when he tried to over-elaborate. Perhaps could have been exploited more than he was but his determination was creditable. Booked early in the second half.

  • Lindsay Rose

    Lindsay Rose

Impressed a week ago and had another good performance at Parc des Princes. Nearly scored an early header but the vast bulk of his work was done effectively in the rearguard.

  • G. Bong

    2.50

    G. Bong

Was a little loose with his passing at times and struggled to contain Pastore when he was on the ball. Made few of his trademark charging runs forward but this was an evening on which discipline was far more important. He became more proactive when PSG went down to 10. Booked for a foul on Lavezzi.

  • Younousse Sankharé

    2.50

    Younousse Sankharé

This was a well-measured performance by the midfielder, who acted as the primary support to the forwards from the centre of the field. He did not break into the box often but he did have a dangerous shot cleared by Sakho. His crosses were threatening.

  • C. Sánchez
    0
    0

    C. Sánchez

The Colombian grafted hard in the centre of the field and was effective in his usual role in destroying PSG attacks. Did have one great chance in the second period but showed why he is a defensive player with a woeful finish tugged wide.

  • Gaël Danic
    1
    0
    4.00

    Gaël Danic

Used on the right flank, contrary to his usual role on the left, but looked a real threat for the visiting side and even put them into the lead with a relatively simple finish. Broke his leg in the previous fixture between the sides but exacted revenge by showing his best form.

  • Remi Gomis
    0
    0
    2.00

    Remi Gomis

A powerful presence in the heart of the Valenciennes midfield, where he effectively performed a role that prevented PSG attacking fluidly. Withdrawn limping with little over an hour played.

  • Maor Melikson
    0

    2.00

    Maor Melikson

The Israeli has looked really sharp since arriving in France in January but on this occasion he was in the shadows rather as his side were forced to do a great deal of defensive work.

  • Vincent Aboubakar

    0
    2.50

    Vincent Aboubakar

Surprisingly preferred to Opa Nguette to lead the Valenciennes offence and found life very tough against two accomplished centre-backs. Nevertheless, he showed on the opening goal that when he is afforded space he can be a very dangerous customer indeed.
