Player Ratings: Arsenal 2-0 West Brom

Two Mikel Arteta penalties either side of half-time saw the Gunners overcome the Baggies at the Emirates, though Santi Cazorla looked to have dived for the first

    Wojciech Szczesny

Was a spectator in the first half, with West Brom recording no shots on target. Came to punch a Brunt corner and got more of McAuley than the ball.

  • Bacary Sagna

    Bacary Sagna

Linked well with Oxlade-Chamberlain, picking out the young winger at full flight several times. Dealt with Brunt's threat well, though did allow the midfielder to escape and let rip with West Brom's best chance of the first half.

  • Per Mertesacker

    Per Mertesacker

Generally untroubled by a blunt West Brom attack that mustered few chances on goal and was a composed figure in defence. Did not enjoy the aerial superiority over Long that you might have expected, and his lack of pace was occasionally exploited. Gave away a free kick with a late challenge.

  • Thomas Vermaelen

    Thomas Vermaelen

Untroubled in the first half as Long targeted the immobile Mertesacker. Got out well to cover Gibbs and block a dangerous cross from Gera with Brunt unmarked in the middle. Enjoyed the tussle with the physical Lukaku more, and battled well against his Belgian team-mate.

  • Kieran Gibbs

    Kieran Gibbs

Showed a blistering turn of pace to keep Odemwingie in check. Tracked the Nigerian's inside runs well, and denied him the chance to support Long in the first half. Got forward well and picked out Gervinho with a dinked cross, but the Ivorian's header was poor.

  • Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta Top of the Match

Kept possession ticking over in trademark fashion and opened the scoring for Arsenal with a composed penalty; Arteta waited for Myhill to move before chipping a Panenka-style penalty down the middle of the goal. Stepped up a second time, showing nerves of steel to pass the ball down the middle again.

  • Jack Wilshere

    Jack Wilshere

Often glided past Mulumbu and Morrison, showing quick feet and trickery, and burst to life in patches in the hole (threading a number of dangerous passes). Almost doubled Arsenal's lead when Gervinho squared the ball from the by-line. With the goal gaping, Wilshere could not quite get enough power on the ball to divert it into the goal.

  • Santi Cazorla

    Santi Cazorla

Did not ooze class like normal and struggled to find time and space against Mulumbu. Won Arsenal the penalty from which Arteta opened the scoring, but Reid did not appear to make contact with the Spaniard. Every replay of the dive looks worse.

  • Olivier Giroud

Olivier Giroud Flop of the Match

Played poorly and seemed out of sync with the rest of Arsenal's attack. Wasted a number of chances, either through poor finishing or wayward passing. The closest he came to finding the back of the net was when he sliced the ball inches over his own bar. Most notable contribution was a disagreement with Olsson.

  • Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
    15
    2
    3.50

    Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Looked a threat when attacking Popov down the right, using his pace. Often wasteful, though saw Mulumbu intercept a cross that looked to be rolling towards Cazorla inside the box. Almost half-volleyed-half-chipped Myhill from an acute angle. Had a hand in Arsenal's second goal, robbing Popov before being taken out by Brunt inside the box. Replaced by Coquelin late on.

  • Gervinho

    14

    Gervinho

A dangerous and direct threat in patches, but his decision-making and wastefulness drew jeers from the crowd. Missed an early chance to take the lead when he dragged his shot wide of Myhill's far post, but would later test the Welsh keeper with a low drive that produced a good save. Squared the ball for Wilshere but the midfielder couldn't get enough on the ball to divert it into the back of an empty net. Conspired to hit only air from six yards. Hugely frustrating and replaced by Rosicky in the final minutes.

The 'Little Mozart' replaced Gervinho with 10 minutes left to play and linked play well.

    Francis Coquelin

Came on in place of Oxlade-Chamberlain in the final 15 minutes as Wenger looked to see out the match. Worked hard in front of the back four.

  • Lukas Podolski
    10

    Lukas Podolski

Came on for Cazorla with only stoppage time remaining but could have struck twice, missing two easy chances.

  • B. Myhill

    B. Myhill

Was warned for time wasting very early on, and his kicking was often dreadful. Dived early for the penalty allowing Arteta to dink the ball down the middle of the goal, and did so a second time, but was otherwise commanding and solid.

  • Steven Reid
    0
    3
    2.50

    Steven Reid

Struggled to contain the unpredictable, dangerous bursts from Gervinho. Conceded the penalty from which Arsenal opened the scoring, though replays appeared to indicate that Reid had not made contact with Cazorla. It was an erratic, needless swipe nevertheless.

  • Jonas Olsson
    2
    3
    3.00

    Jonas Olsson

Rushed a number of clearances, handing possession back to Arsenal, but formed a solid wall with McAuley. Both centre-backs were unlucky to concede twice, having limited the number of clear-cut chances Arsenal had. Strong as ever in the air.

  • Liam Ridgewell

    Liam Ridgewell

His game ended inside the first 10 minutes through injury, and he had no time to influence the match. He left the field to the sight of hundreds of Arsenal fans waving £20 notes in his direction.

  • Gareth McAuley
    1
    2
    3.50

    Gareth McAuley

Commanding in the air and relished aerial battles with Giroud and Mertesacker. Looked assured when the play was in front of him, but less composed on the turn. Headed wide from a Chris Brunt free kick and was a threat on set pieces.

  • James Morrison
    1
    1
    3.00

    James Morrison

Linked well with Mulumbu, though Yacob's absence was felt. More progressive and adventurous with his passing than Mulumbu. Was the Baggies most creative player, but occasionally left holes in midfield.

  • Chris Brunt
    0
    3
    2.50

    Chris Brunt

Struck a vicious drive from just inside the box that whistled past Szczesny's far post and was tireless in midfield, but that eagerness to tackle saw him slide in late on Oxlade-Chamberlain and concede a penalty from which Arsenal scored their second goal.

  • Youssouf Mulumbu
    1
    2
    3.50

    Youssouf Mulumbu

Typically robust and hard-working performance. Made a brilliant sliding interception to deny Cazorla a tap-in. Hindered Arsenal's penetration through the middle and kept the ball well himself. Tough-tackling and no-nonsense, as ever.

  • Zoltán Gera
    0
    3
    2.00

    Zoltán Gera

Had little impact on the match and struggled to get on the ball in a crowded midfield. Worked hard and packed the middle third, as you would expect, but lacked the craft and creativity of the Arsenal midfield. Replaced by Rosenberg.

  • Shane Long
    0
    3
    2.50

    Shane Long

A tireless, frantic nuisance up front and contested every ball, but was starved of supply. Came too deep in search of the ball and gave away several free kicks through frustration. Lacked support throughout and rarely troubled Szczesny.

  • Peter Odemwingie
    0
    4
    2.00

    Peter Odemwingie

Peripheral and ineffective, Odemwingie had almost no impact on the game. Gibbs dealt with him easily down the line and Vermaelen crowded him out when he came inside. Gave no support to Long.

Substitutions

  • Goran Popov
    0
    1
    2.00

    Goran Popov

Replaced Ridgewell inside the opening 10 minutes. Struggled to keep pace with Oxlade-Chamberlain when the winger got in behind, and was easily shrugged aside by the winger for Arsenal's second penalty. Offered nothing going forward.

  • Markus Rosenberg
    0
    1
    2.50

    Markus Rosenberg

Replaced Gera as Clark pushed for a route back into the game, but had no effect on the match.

  • Romelu Lukaku

    1
    3.00

    Romelu Lukaku

Came on for Odemwingie and brought more physicality to the offence, though struggled to get the better of Vermaelen. Could have grabbed a goal but headed wide.
