Live Commentary

  • That is all from me. Villa fully deserve all three points here. Cardiff need to go back to the drawing board after an inept second half display. See you next time!
  • Villa get their first win in five games and their first goal too since beating Manchester City 3-2 on September 28. Manager Lambert will be delighted with hsi team. The Scot made an important tactical change at the break reverting to 4-4-2. Malky Mackay, though, will be disappointed that his side could not secure back-to-back wins after beating Swansea last week.
  • 90' + 5'
    Yellow Card Ciaran Clark
  • 90' + 4'
Martin Atkinson has blown for full-time. There it is for Villa and their fans.
  • 90' + 3'
Villa pressing Cardiff in their own half, keeping the visitors away from Guzan's goal. Confidence flowing through the home side now. Amazing what a couple of goals can do!
  • 90' + 2'
Cardiff have been poor in this second period. If anything they were more of a threat with Odemwingie on the pitch. Campbell, a second-half sub, has been invisible.
  • 90'
Four minutes of added time to be played. Villa minutes away now from securing their first win in five games.
  • 88'
    SubstitutionLibor Kozák Jordan Nathaniel Bowery
  • 87'
Villa making change now as they try to close out the match. The goalscorer Kozak is going off for Bowery.
  • 84'
    Assist Matthew Lowton
  • 84'
    Goal Libor Kozák
GOAL!!!!! Villa have scored again. Cardiff fail to clear their lines and Tonev knocks the ball back across the goal and Kozak gets in front his marker to nod into the net. Villa hadn't scored in over seven hours of football, they have now netted twice in eight minutes. Surely all three points will be going to Villa now.
  • 83'
Tonev again finds space on the left and he angles a pass towards Benteke, who makes a diagonal run into the box. Caulker watches him all the way, though, and gets an important foot to the ball first.
  • 82'
    SubstitutionCraig Bellamy Nicky Maynard
  • 80'
Looking at replays of that goal Marshall was wrong footed, leaving him with little chance to get across to make the save.
  • 78'
Cardiff have it all to do now after Bacuna's brilliant free-kick, while Medel will want the ground to swallow him up.
  • 76'
    Goal Leandro Bacuna
GOAL!!!!!!!! Villa have scored their first goal in over seven hours of Premier League football. A Bacuna free-kick has put Villa 1-0 up here. He curled a fantastic effort round the wall and Marshall could not get anywhere near that. Manager Malky Mackay will be furious with Medel who gave away the initial foul when he tugged Bacuna's shirt.
  • 75'
    Yellow Card Gary Medel
  • 74'
    SubstitutionK. El Ahmadi Matthew Lowton
  • 74'
Villa's El Ahmadi is subbed off for Lowton.
  • 72'
Mutch plays a great through ball to Campbell. The former Sunderland forward can really run onto it but he fails to sufficiently control the ball and in the end is eased off it by Bacuna.
  • 70'
Medel runs onto a loose ball after Bellamy's cross fails to find Mutch. Medel, though, hits his effort well wide of the goal.
  • 68'
Paul Lambert is up from his seat to try and stir his team from their slumber. We're midway through the second half and both sides are yet to really trouble the keeper.
  • 66'
A Clark foul gives Cardiff a chance here, but Whittingham's free-kick is overhit and Guzan collects.
  • 65'
    SubstitutionAron Einar Gunnarsson Jordon Mutch
  • 64'
Cardiff about to make a second change. Jordon Mutch is coming on for Aron Gunnarsson.
  • 62'
Benteke runs are at the Cardiff back line but hits a loose ball to Kozak. The ball though bounces kindly back to Westwood and his immediate shot flies out past the upright. Decent effort.
  • 60'
Villa are resorting to hitting the ball long to their two front-men. Both Kozak and Benteke are decent players with the ball played through to them along the floor.
  • 58'
Cardiff have a free-kick just inside their half. The ball goes out for a Cardiff throw but the Bluebirds, playing in yellow this afternoon, fail to keep the ball in Villa's half and are pushed back.
  • 56'
Cardiff immediately put Villa keeper Guzan under pressure after Theophile-Catherine crosses. The Amerian flaps at the ball and his defence clear.
  • 55'
    SubstitutionPeter Odemwingie Fraizer Campbell
  • 54'
Odemwingie is the man going off and Campbell is coming on.
  • 52'
Just looking at replays of that challenge on Benteke. The referee was perfectly placed to make the decision. He gets it spot on too. Cardiff's Peter Whittingham was the man who made the tackle. Cardiff look like they are going to make a change...
  • 51'
Tonev goes bombing down the left wing but his cross finds no one and the ball is easily cleared.
  • 49'
Atkinson waves play on after Benteke is challenged. Villa retain possession and Kozak has a great chance to score when his downward header is well saved by Marshall who tips the ball away.
  • 47'
The left-back Taylor plays the ball into Odemwingie who falls to the ground before having a chance to control the ball. The 32-year-old really is the weak link of the Cardiff line-up and needs to up his game if the visitors want to break this deadlock.
  • 46'
There has been no change from either manager which is surprising, but Villa have moved to 4-4-2 after playing with three at the back in the first half.
  • The players are slowly making their way back onto the field. Will the half-time talk have had the desired impact after a rather tame first period?
  • HALF-TIME: One minute of stoppage time is played and the referee blows for half-time. Unsuprisingly boos ring out from the stands. A bright start from sides was quickly followed by a failure to cut open either defence for much of the half. Both teams are stuggling to find that incisive pass or create any sustained pressure on the opposition goal.
  • 45' + 1'
The referee brings the first period to a close.
  • 44'
Gary Medel tries a long ball but gifts the ball to Villa's Tonev who races through on to Cardiff's goal. Sadly, though, the 23-year-old fires a wild shot over the bar. He should have looked to either wing for support instead.
  • 42'
Kozak and Benteke both go for the same ball rather like Cardiff's Medel and Caulker did earlier in the match. Except this time the ball evades both strikers and no one is hurt.
  • 40'
Five minutes from the break and I wouldn't be surprised if we see a change in personnel or tactics from either manager.
  • 38'
Pulling out some facts there because frankly the match is failing to live up to its billing. Both defences are on top in this match.
  • 36'
This is the first Premier League meeting between the two clubs, and the first in the top flight since a 2-2 draw at Villa Park way back in 1962.
  • 34'
Bellamy finds himself in space deep in Villa's half after some good build-up play by Cardiff, but the former Wales striker hits a poor cross by his standards and the ball is cleared.
  • 32'
While Villa's back three may be organised, the front two strikers Kozak and Benteke need to be more imaginative. Villa haven't found the net in nearly seven hours of football now.
  • 30'
Craig Belllamy hits a free-kick straight at Guzan. The ball goes up and over the wall but there isn't quite enough venom in the strike to trouble the American keeper.
  • 28'
Cardiff look to break down the left wing, passing the ball neatly along the floor but Taylor is tackled by the well tackled by Vlaar.
  • 26'
Malky Mackay may have to rethink his attacking options here. Odemwingie is failing to keep the ball, meaning each attack breaks down before the Bluebirds' midfield have a chance to support the 32-year-old in attack.
  • 24'
After those initial chances in the opening quarter of the match both teams have settled now and trying to break each other down in the midfield. Odemwingie looks a bit out of his depth amongst the burly Villa defence.
  • 22'
Odemwingie loops the ball over the Villa defence but the hosts' back line clear the wayward ball.
  • 20'
Gary Medel has hit the turf after his own teammate Caulker crashes into the back of him. Both Cardiff players going for the same ball there. Medel currently getting treatment.
  • 19'
Odemwingie is played the ball into his feet but the former Baggies forward gives the ball away under pressure from the Villa defence.
  • 17'
Cardiff are the only side in the Premier League yet to lead a match at half-time this campaign, but Villa have conceded the opening goal in seven fixtures this season.
  • 14'
Caulker fouls Benteke with a shove in the back. The England man is clearly trying to remind Benteke that he isn't going to have it all his own way this afternoon. The forward though has been poor of late. He hasn't scored since the 2-1 loss against Newcastle in September.
  • 11'
Villa go straight up the other end and remind the visitors of their own attacking threat. Benteke wins his side a corner after Marshall smartly saves the Belgian's shot. The centre forward then heads over when he escapes his marker from the corner. He should have done better with that with so much time to direct the ball. Still 0-0 but both sides could have scored.
  • 9'
Cardiff City have a free-kick in the middle of the park after referee Martin Atkinson decides not to keep play going. And Kozak nearly heads into his own net from the resulting set-piece, but the ball just snakes past the post. The Villa keeper was helpless there.
  • 7'
A bright start from Villa who are keen to blow away their recent poor home form. Steven Caulker has been called into action on more than one occasion.
  • 4'
Marshall again is called into action and this time the flag stays down. El Ahmadi fires off a long-shot from well outside the Cardiff box. The effort is dipping all the time but Marshall pushes the shot away with Benteke closing in.
  • 1'
Kozak has a fierce shot which Cardiff keeper Marshall gets down well to but the assistant referee has got his flag up for offside. Great atmosphere in the Midlands this afternoon.

KICK OFF: Aston Villa have got the match underway.
  • We're going to have a minute silence ahead of Remembrance Sunday tomorrow.
  • We're two minutes away from kick-off here at Villa Park and the teams are walking out onto the pitch. Villa have enjoyed just one home win all season and that was against Man City. Little did Villa fans know they were then going to lose the next two home matches 2-0 to Everton and Tottenham.
  • Cardiff City subs: Hudson, Campbell, Kim, Noone, Mutch, Maynard, Lewis
  • For Cardiff, Aron Gunnarsson and Don Cowie both start. Cardiff starting XI: Marshall, Taylor, Caulker, Turner, Whittingham, Medel, Odemwingie, Gunnarsson, Cowie, Theophile-Catherine, Bellamy.
  • Aston Villa subs: Helenius, Steer, Herd, Bowery, Lowton, Johnson, Robinson. Villa have a long injury list. Andreas Weimann, Antonio Luna and Joe Bennett are all out - not to mention the long-term absentees: Gary Gardner (back), Jores Okore (knee) and Charles N'Zogbia (Achilles).
  • Aston Villa make two changes from the side which drew with West Ham as Libor Kozak and Aleks Tonev start. Aston Villa starting XI: Guzan, Bacuna, Vlaar, Clark, Baker, El Ahmadi, Westwood, Sylla, Tonev, Benteke, Kozak.
  • The last time these two sides met was in the Capital One Cup in 2009. Gabriel Agbonlahor scored that evening to give Villa a 1-0 win but he fails to make the starting line-up today due to injury.
  • I'm Harry Kemble, and I will be leading you through all of the action at Villa Park. After a bright start to the season Villa have really struggled of late. Not only have they failed to win any of their last four games, they also have not scored since beating Manchester City 3-2 in September.
  • Hello and welcome to coverage of the Premier League clash between Aston Villa and Cardiff City. Malky Mackay's side are riding high after beating Swansea City in the first top-flight South Wales derby last Sunday. Today Cardiff will be looking for back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Villa, meanwhile, have failed to win their last four matches.
