Five players who could emerge as stars in the League Cup this season
1. Francis Coquelin
Having made his debut for Arsenal over three years ago in the League Cup, 21-year-old Francis Coquelin must prove influential in this season’s competition if he is continue his progression at Emirates, unlike previous prospects such as Carlos Vela and Jeremie Aliadiere.
Despite an impressive stint on loan at Ligue 1 side Lorient in the 2010-11 season, the Frenchman, who can play in both midfield and defence, failed to cement a place in the Gunners starting XI last season, making just seven starts since returning to the Premier League.
However, with Alex Song departing for Barcelona and Abou Diaby the club’s only recognised first-team defensive midfielder, Coquelin may finally be handed his opportunity, with the under-21 international admitting he “cannot be patient any more”.
