The Latics were playing in their second top-flight season and, after a comfortable first campaign, struggled badly to match those performances.
As the Hammers won game after game, Paul Jewell's side went on a desperate eight-game run without a win to leave themselves 18th and three points from safety as they ended their season against Sheffield United, two places and three points ahead of them.
The Blades and Latics' similar goal difference meant any Wigan win would be enough to save them at their hosts' expense and they duly delivered, with David Unsworth smashing home the winning goal from the penalty spot to send the club he had left for Lancashire just four months earlier to the Championship.
Unsworth and Jewell both left the club that summer, but it would not be the last time the Latics found themselves up against it with time running out to save their top-flight status...
