Van Persie, Suarez & the early contenders for player of the season
1. Robin van Persie
Eyebrows were raised when Manchester United shelled out £24 million for Robin van Persie last summer, despite the 29-year-old being named the Player of the Year just a few months earlier.
Sir Alex Ferguson needed to buy a central midfielder, and still does, not another forward with Wayne Rooney, Chicharito and Danny Welbeck all jostling for first-team opportunities.
However, having notched 30 goals last season, the Dutchman has already netted a further 19 goals in 27 appearances for his new side as United look on course to take the title away from their local rivals after building up a 15-point lead at the top of the table.
City manager Roberto Mancini even admitted recently that Van Persie has “changed” the title race in United's favour, adding: “We wanted him in the summer because we knew he would be an important player.”
