Of the four French-based players that Newcastle have been pursuing so hotly this January, Haidara is undoubtedly the least established figure, having broken into Nancy’s first team midway through last season.
At 20-years-old, he has played just 46 top flight matches for les Chardons - with a further five in cup competition - but in what has been an extremely gloomy season for them to date he has been a genuine shining light.
His raids from the left-back area provided rare penetration for his team, while he also served the well ably on the defensive front.
Had Nancy not been in the midst of drastic cost-cutting measures this January, which will surely hasten their relegation from France’s top flight, they would surely have done more to keep hold of one of the most exciting youngsters in Ligue 1 this season.
With David Santon struggling for form, the youngster could be thrown straight into the fray at St James’ Park, and the odds are in his favour that he will make a positive instant impression.
