Better known as 'Palito', meaning 'Little Stick', Pereira is a player who suddenly became extremely important for national team coach Oscar Tabarez, in the second round of South American qualifiers.  

At the end of 2008 and beginning of 2009 Tabarez called him up for two friendlies, and Pereira’s performance was so good that he never left the squad. He played ten matches in the World Cup qualifiers, including the play-offs against Costa Rica.
