Jonathan Spector – Like most of the American squad, Spector plays his club football in Europe. He left for England as a 17-year-old and joined Manchester United. That move never panned out, and Spector has carved out a role for himself at West Ham United. The 24-year-old used his versatility to wiggle into Gianfranco Zola's side once he regained fitness in 2009, often featuring at leftback. However, it wasn't a very solid season for either West Ham or Spector, as defensive lapses plagued the team and it narrowly avoided relegation.

Spector planted himself firmly in the U.S. national team picture in the 2009 Confederations Cup. He started all five games and provided two assists thanks to his excellent delivery from deep. With the more experienced Steve Cherundolo fit again, Spector faces a battle for the rightback starting spot in the World Cup.
