South Africa's Bernard Parker goes down as Canada's Paul Stalteri gets in his way (PA)
Bernard Parker has wasted little time in proving himself a worthy heir to Benni McCarthy's mantle at the sharp end of the Bafana Bafana attack. The young front man has been making a reputation with some gutsy performances for South Africa.
Born in Boksburg, just outside Johannesburg, it was Parker's successful spell with South African outfit Thanda Royal Zulu that saw him earn a place on the wish list of many European sides, among them Manchester City while Sven Goran Eriksson was still head coach.

He eventually signed for Serbian heavyweights Red Star Belgrade in January 2009, but had a bad stint at the club, marred by unpaid salaries and politics, at which point he terminated his contract with the help of FIFA. The Confederations Cup was a self-marketing platform for him as he led the Bafana attack like a seasoned campaigner and his exploits caught the eye of Dutch giants FC Twente, who signed him immediately.

His call-up to the national team in 2007 was said to be something of a gamble at the time, but he has since acquitted himself extremely well at international level. He has been one of the few players who has scored on a regular basis for Bafana.

Did you know?

Parker has a tattoo of the UEFA Champions League logo as he has always had dreams of playing in the competition.
