Bruno Alves

Tough tackling Bruno Alves has been a rock at the heart of the FC Porto defence for since Jesualdo Ferreira took over in 2006. A product of the their youth academy, the 6 ft 2in defender struggled to make an impression during the early years of his career at Estadio do Dragao and spent the best part of three years on loan to other clubs. However, Ferreira’s appointment signalled the start of what quickly became a fantastic four years for the half-Brazilian Portuguese international. There were some who questioned how much he relied on central defensive partner Pepe - a myth that quickly unravelled with Pepe’s subsequent departure to Real Madrid.
The Porto captain earned his first international call-up under Luiz Filipe Scolari’s reign and has since gone on to become a mainstay of the national side. Pepe’s recent move into a defensive midfield role has seen Alves forge a formidable partnership with Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho and the Porto man will be an integral part of Carlos Queiroz rock-solid defence in South Africa.
