Raul Meireles is a product of the Boavista academy and got a taste for silverware very early, winning the UEFA European Under-16 Football Championship in 2000.

His debut in domestic football came via a loan spell with Clube Desportivo das Aves before Boavista installed the dogged midfielder in their own side. The youngster impressed so much that he spent just one season in the Panthers starting line-up before Portuguese giants FC Porto snapped him up in 2004.

The midfielder’s career really burst to life in the 2006-07 season when he formed a formidable partnership shadowing Argentine midfielder Lucho Gonzalez and quickly went on to earn a call-up to the national team. With great vision, solid tackling and an indefatigable ability to cover ground, the box-to-box midfielder has since gone on to make 30 appearances for Seleccao.
