While Sunderland fans may not have seen an awful lot of their latest South American import, the Paraguay national team certainly has. Nobody played more qualifiers than he did, the tough tackling centre-back missed just one of his side’s 18 matches during qualification. He formed a formidable partnership with Julio Cesar Caceres at the heart of the defence and also chipped in with a couple goals.
After being a part of the Paraguay squad that travelled to the FIFA World Youth Championship in 1997 and 1999, he missed out on World Cup 2002 before making the trip to German in 2006, only to be left in reserve. After spending six years in Mexico with Deportivo Toluca, Steve Bruce swooped to bring him to the Premier League last year.

Paulo Da Silva played 1525 minutes in Conmebol World Cup qualifying, a total bettered only by ‘keeper Justo Villar (1530 mins).
