Mark van Bommel - Bayern Munich
While being very successful with his clubs during his career, the ‘marriage’ between Mark van Bommel and the Dutch national team has never been a happy one. The midfielder hopes to finally write a good chapter in his Oranje book in South Africa.

Making his debut in 1993 at the tender age of 16, PSV signed Van Bommel from Fortuna Sittard in 1999. The energetic midfielder became an important player at Eindhoven and accrued a lot of honours. Louis van Gaal, his current coach at Bayern Munich, let Van Bommel play for the first time in the Dutch national team in the World Cup qualifier against Cyprus on 7 October 2000.

Van Bommel won four league titles and one national cup at PSV. His biggest triumph would come however at FC Barcelona. The Spanish giants beat Arsenal 2-1 in Saint-Denis in the 2005/2006 edition. His period in Spain would last only one season; Bayern Munich signed Van Bommel in the summer of 2006. The 32 year old Dutchman is captain of the team he supported as a child and has just completed a league and cup double.

The World Cup in South Africa will only be Van Bommel’s second big international tournament in his career. Due to injuries and a ‘problem’ with coach Marco van Basten, he decided to ‘retire’  from international football after World Cup 2006 as long as San Marco was the national coach. After Euro 2008 Van Bommel came back in the Dutch national team and is now a regular.

Did you know that:

Mark van Bommel is married to Andra van Marwijk, daughter of the current national coach Bert van Marwijk?
