Edson Braafheid

His move to Bayern Munich did not turn out to be a success, but at Scottish giants Celtic, Edson Braafheid hoped to get more match practice in order to earn a place in the Dutch World Cup squad. Braafheid, in good shape, could be important for the Dutch team, which lacks really good left-backs.
Coming from the youth ranks of FC Utrecht, Braafheid got his first taste of professional football in the 2003/2004 season. The Paramaribo-born left-back quickly conquered a place in the first team and turned out to be a good prospect. However, Braafheid wanted to go to a bigger club in the 2006/2007 season and joined FC Twente halfway through that season.
It was at Twente that Braafheid got his first international call-up from coach Bert van Marwijk. His good performances at Twente earned him a transfer to the German giants Bayern. He failed to impress at Der Rekordmeister and was loaned out to Celtic, where he tried to show his qualities to Van Marwijk alongside countrymen Glenn Loovens and Jos Hooiveld.

Edson Braafheid is proud of his Surinam roots. He played several games for charity together with the Suriprofs, a team of players who were born in Surinam or whose parents (or one of them) is from that country.
