Like Gigi Buffon, when he was young he played without gloves, covering the role of striker, but then discovered this 'vocation' and he has excelled in the role. He's considered one of the best Italian goalkeepers, for present and future, and currently he's the second-choice in National team.
Marchetti is the classic goalkeeper who developed in he minor leagues. He played for Pro Vercelli and Biella, then he went to Albinoleffe in Serie B and eventually onto Cagliari. In Lippi's hierarchies he has overtaken Marco Amelia, who no longer has a spot on the team, and in South Africa he will be Buffon's replacement if necessary.
