Nikos Spiropoulos - Panathinaikos (INTIME)

A product of the Greek Super League, Spiropoulos has established himself as a defensive gem for both club and country. Starting out his career with PAS Giannina, Spiropoulos signed on at Panionios where he continued to flourish at higher levels. His success in Nea Smyrni prompted Panathinaikos to bring the youngster to Athens, where he continued to display his talent. His contributions have played a large part in his club's success throughout the 2009-10 season, as Panathinaikos have made great strides towards a domestic title as well as a strong run in the Europa League.

On the international level Spiropoulos emerged shortly after the demise of Giourkas Seitaridis as Vasilis Torosidis was used to replace the EURO 2004 winner. Taking up a role previously had by Takis Fyssas, Spiropoulos' agility on the ball, as well as stamina, were highly regarded by manager Otto Rehhagel. Featuring just once for Greece at EURO 2008, Spiropoulos didn’t have much of a chance to leave an impression on the national team until the qualifiers for the upcoming World Cup. His performances for the squad played a big part in Greece’s success in the group, including the play-off defeat of Ukraine to ultimately qualify for the tournament.

Did you know?

Spiropoulos' original transfer from Panionios to Panathinaikos was annulled by the Greek governing body as it was reported he had elevated levels of Epitestosterone. Spiropoulos was suspended for one season, and the results of the test were investigated. It turned out the high ratio was a result of natural causes.
