Terry could not have had a worse preparation for the World Cup after being stripped of the England captaincy and seeing his own form dip dramatically as Chelsea won the Premier League title.

Losing the Three Lions armband was a direct response to revelations of an alleged affair with a girlfriend of former England team-mate Wayne Bridge. Bridge announced he couldn't play again with Terry and Capello decided the indiscretion was bad enough to lose Terry his position as team mentor.

Terry is expected to keep his place at the centre of defence but with such a rocky build-up to the tournament may not be his usual bullish self come June 12.
