A tackle from USA international Landon Donovan while playing for Everton on Chelsea's Ashley Cole put the defender's chances of taking part in the World Cup in serious doubt. And with Wayne Bridge refusing to play it would have left the Three Lions woefully exposed at left-back.

Thankfully, Cole's ankle recovered just in time and the highly regarded defender, regularly dubbed the best left-back in the world, is able to pull on the white shirt. Not the most popular of players due to a confidence that borders on arrogance, few will deny Cole's importance to Fabio Capello's squad.

Did you know?  Cole was caught driving at more than 100 mph in a 50mph zone earlier in the year and banned from driving.
