Conspicuous height allows Kennedy to give the Socceroos another dimension to their attacking play, though the focus on his aerial ability detracts from the technical quality he offers whenever the ball is at his feet. It’s what you would expect after the striker spent nearly a decade moving between clubs in Germany, only to now find his niche in the J-League.

Goals and full games have come much easier to a man who is likely to be tasked with leading the line in Pim Verbeek’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation in South Africa, as the seemingly natural successor to the retired Mark Viduka.

His goal-to-game ratio for the Socceroos has been admirable thus far but there is the argument that he would be far more effective in a traditional little-and-large front pairing with the diminutive Scott McDonald – a system that has yet to be fully trialled by the Dutch manager.

For Kennedy it is likely a moot point: the fact remains that he was virtually unknown in football circles back home before his shock call-up to Guus Hiddink’s squad for the World Cup in Germany, where he made quite an impression as an impact player before going on to potentially become the nation’s first choice front-man.

Did You Know?

At the age of 17 Kennedy became the youngest ever player to represent Wolfsburg, when he came on as a substitute in their clash with Hamburg back in 2000.
