Yanga must learn from their mistakes

Yanga have an opportunity to play in the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup like they did two years ago

Yanga have been eliminated from the CAF Champions League by Township Rollers after playing a goalless draw in the second leg encounter which was held in Gaborone, Botswana on Saturday.

In the first leg which was held in Dar es Salaam, Yanga accepted a 2-1 defeat at home something which caused the difuculty in the return leg.

After the game, Yanga’s skipper Nadir Haroub “Cannavaro” was quick to suggest that their failure in the tournament was down to not using their home advantage.

“We played very well today but we have been eliminated because we did not use our home advantage in the first leg,” said Cannavaro.

When you listen to the words of the skipper you can agree that Yanga’s mistakes were made at home two weeks ago. They had a chance to finish the tie but ended up losing the game at home. That was the mistake.

The same mistake was committed by Yanga last season in this tournament when they played against Zesco of Zambia at the same stage of the playoffs.

At home they drew 1-1 then drew away 0-0 to conclude their elimination by an away goal rule . In this kind of game you must finish the tie at home by scoring enough goals in order to ease pressure in the second leg.

This may be the problem with Tanzania’s teams because even their arch rival Simba SC have been crashed out of the CAF Confederation Cup on the hands of Egyptin side Al Masry on the same day through an away goal after playing a goalless draw at Egypt while they drew 2-2 at home on March 7.

Now Yanga have been relegated to the CAF Confederation Cup and they will await a draw which wil be held in March 26 to know their opponets.

This will be their chance of correcting their mistakes and having a go at continental glory and they have to act fast in the coming matches of this tournament at home.

Coach George Lwandamani must tell his players the importance of winning at home. They have to try tirelessly to win games at home in order to put the tie to bed very early.

This is the kind of tournament were by every team tries hard to win the home matches because it is not easy to score goals or to win when you are away.

Do you remember how Yanga progressed into the group stage that year? They won 2-0 at home against Sagrada Esperanca of Angola and then defeated 1-0 away, but the big win at home helped them to move into the group stage.
