Who is out and who can still go through in the Champions League?

Comments
Heading into the final round of the group stage of Europe's premier club competition, many teams still have a final chance of progressing or securing a place in the Europa League

GROUP A

Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain sit level on 11 points ahead of Ludogorets and Basel on two, meaning there is no mystery as to who proceeds from Group A. But the pool winner and the recipient of a spot in the Europa League still needs to be decided.

The top two may have drawn each of their head-to-head clashes, but it is PSG who have the advantage heading into the final game of the round as they scored one more away goal against Arsenal than they conceded. Thus, when they play host to Ludogorets on Tuesday, Unai Emery’s men need only match the Gunners’ result against Basel in Switzerland to ensure they finish top.

Similarly for third place, Ludogorets hold the advantage on away goals over Basel, so they just need to match or better Basel’s result to qualify for the Europa League.

GROUP B

Napoli and Benfica have their place in the Champions League second round in their own hands, but it could be either first place or third place for them.

The Portuguese club host Napoli with the two level on eight points, but a draw is enough for the Italian side, who won the reverse fixture.

With Besiktas sitting just one point behind those two, a win away to Dynamo Kyiv will see them through and will even put them top if Benfica and Napoli draw.

If Napoli lose their game, they will be desperate for Dynamo to get three points as even a draw in Ukraine won’t save Maurizio Sarri’s men, whose head-to-head record with Besiktas is poor.

GROUP C

While Manchester City playing host to Celtic after their 3-3 draw in Glasgow may appear an exciting tie and Barcelona’s meeting with Borussia Monchengladbach looks an entertaining encounter, there is nothing left to play for in Group C.

Barcelona are group winners, City are second, the Germans are in the Europa League and Celtic are out.

GROUP D

Atletico Madrid’s perfect record after five games puts them through in first place regardless of the result against second-placed Bayern Munich.

PSV sit three points behind Tuesday’s opponents Rostov, but, after drawing 2-2 with them in Russia, they can still beat them to a place in the Europa League with a win in Eindhoven.

GROUP E

Monaco’s place at the top of Group E is insurmountable regardless of their result against second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, who are also secure of a place in the next round.

With a point between them, Tottenham and CSKA Moscow must battle it out for third place at Wembley, with the home side having the advantage.

GROUP F

Reigning Champions League holders Real Madrid are already through, but they are not in pole position heading into the last game against current leaders Borussia Dortmund. A win at Santiago Bernabeu would see Zinedine Zidane’s men leapfrog the German club.

Legia sit two points behind Sporting, meaning the Polish side must win Wednesday’s home game to continue their continental campaign in the Europa League.

GROUP G

Leicester City have won the pool, but they can still influence who joins them in the next round. The Premier League champions visit second-placed Porto, who will progress regardless of their result if FC Copenhagen fail to win away to Club Brugge. But, with a superior head-to-head record, a win for the Danish side will see them through if Porto lose or draw.

GROUP H

Juventus are sure of their place in the next round and will secure first place if they beat Dinamo Zagreb or if Sevilla, sitting just one point behind, fail to win against Lyon.

Lyon, who are three points behind Wednesday’s visitors, can finish second if they win by two goals or more due to their previous 1-0 loss to Jorge Sampaoli’s men.

Dinamo Zagreb are doomed to finish fourth.
