We made our lives difficult against Acornbush United, admits Kaizer Chiefs coach Komphela

Amakhosi stretched their unbeaten run to 12 matches in all competitions with an emphatic come-from-behind victory at Kabokweni Stadium on Sunday

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela felt his players lacked patience and maturity to effectively deal with ABC Motsepe League side Acornbush United.

The Glamour Boys needed two late goals from second half Gustavo Paez to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup.

“We made our lives difficult and we all know it is a nightmare for any fullback to defend a diagonal ball, but the pace of Sidumo; how he squared the ball and left the fullback for dead,” Komphela said post-match.

“I thought we lacked the patience and maturity to deal with matches of this calibre. In matches like this, you cannot run with the ball because the opposition’s intention is; ‘I wanna mark this player from Chiefs’. So, you’re making life difficult for yourselves. How could you have simplified this is to pass and move, pass and move. Simplicity would have been the best here, which we did later on,” Komphela said.

As they battled to get into the contest, Komphela admits they had to think from the bench and took risks to change the complexion of the game.

He sacrificed his two fullbacks (Kgotso Moleko and Sibusiso), and introduced more offensive players against a 10-man Acornbush outfit.

“We had to think from the bench. We had to manipulate the match because the team on the field was trying its utmost best but the results were not coming. Now, you have to start thinking as a coach, compromise a few players, make a few unpopular decisions to try and get a victory. Now, we have to go back and not try and repeat the mistake,” Komphela concluded.
