Ulinzi Stars forward Stephen Waruru has termed as “malicious” allegations that he insulted Gor Mahia fans during their league match on Sunday.

Waruru scored two goals after coming on as a second half substitute to help the soldiers grab a 2-2 draw against K’Ogalo in Kisumu. However, it was Waruru’s second goal in the 90th minute that elicited mixed reaction from a section of Gor Mahia fans after violence broke out from the stands, forcing security personnel to fire tear gas canisters to disperse the rowdy fans.

Gor Mahia later released a statement accusing Waruru of provoking their fans by showing them his ‘middle finger’. But in a quick rejoinder, the leading league scorer has termed the allegation as “blatant lies and justification to hooliganism.”

“Those are blatant lies and people are just trying to justify acts of hooliganism,” Waruru told Ulinzi Stars official website.

“No one raised a finger to them. I just celebrated my goal by removing my jersey. Them turning it around and saying I made an abusive gesture is quite unfortunate.”
