Vilakazi: We owe it to our Sundowns fans to beat AS Vita Club

Vilakazi is hopeful that Masandawana can finally win at home in this year's Caf Champions League group stage

Mamelodi Sundowns are set to lock horns with Congolese giants AS Vita Club on Sunday evening.

Despite Masandawana having already booked their place in the knockout rounds of the Caf Champions League, victory would give them the chance of topping their group, provided the other group result go their way.

Nonetheless, it has been an indifferent campaign for the defending champions, who have failed to win any of their games at home in this year’s group stage, which makes victory more important, according to Sundowns attacker Sibusiso Vilakazi.

“We have to try and win at home,” Vilakazi told IOL.

“We have not done very well at home and we owe it to our fans to give them something to celebrate,” he said.

Sundowns may have earned an impressive 3-1 victory in the reverse fixture in Kinshasa, but Vilakazi maintains that Vita Club are not an easy team to beat.

“Actually, it was a very tough game, but we responded very well and got the three goals. It was great to play in a crowded stadium with the people singing and we used the crowd as motivation,” Vilakazi said.

“The win at St. George was good. We played with a very positive attitude and the job continues. We will try to keep the momentum and do well to give ourselves a break. We are in a good position but we’d like to finish on top,” Vilakazi added.

“We have to win the match regardless of what happens in the other match (Esperance v St George). And it is motivating to hear that Vita are bringing all their players even though they are out of the competition,” Vilakazi concluded.
