David Villa has scored some stunners in his storied career, and on Friday night he added a long-range bomb to his list of goals.
Helping New York City FC to see out a 1-0 lead in the dying minutes, Villa battled with a Philadelphia Union defender near the halfway line as both players chased after the loose ball.
Getting the position on his man, Villa launched a hopeful lob from roughly 50 yards out toward Andre Blake's goal. The goalkeeper, running backward in an effort to stop the shot, could only watch as the ball sailed over his outstretched arms, just under the crossbar.
Villa told ESPN that he launched the ball from near the center circle because he was "tired" and didn't feel like running at the end of the game.
The goal secured a 2-0 win for NYCFC, and boosted the team into a tie for top spot in the Eastern Conference.
