The iconic World Cup winner is to bring a 24-year playing career at Stadio Olimpico to a close in a Serie A meeting with Genoa on Sunday

Francesco Totti will take in his final fixture as a Roma player on Sunday, with a 24-year career coming to a close.

An iconic figure in the Italian capital is approaching the end of his contract and, at 40 years of age, will not be offered fresh terms.

Did Totti become too big for Roma?

Totti has hinted that he may opt to extend his playing days somewhere else, but there is a directorial post waiting for him at Stadio Olimpico.

No decision is to be taken on his future yet, though, with the focus for now on looking back over the most remarkable of careers which started way back on March 28, 1993.

It is incredible to think that Totti’s senior career pre-dates eBay, Amazon and Friends!

Beckham 'almost joined Roma for Totti'

It may be that there is just one more outing to come, with a Serie A clash with Genoa taking him to 786 for Roma.

Whatever happens, though, a man who tasted World Cup glory in 2006 and has remained remarkably loyal to his home-town club is assured of his rightful place in football folklore.
