The Cape Town side condemned Wits to a 6-0 drubbing in Bellville

The University of Western Cape were the biggest winners in the opening round of the 2017 Varsity Football campaign on Thursday evening.

The Bellville side completed a 6-0 rout over Wits University at the UWC Sports Stadium, in Bellville.

Chad Smith and man-of-the-match Phiwokuhle Mpalala grabbed a brace apiece, whilst captain Thulani Mkosi and Ryan Steer also registered their names on the scoresheet in the resounding victory.

Despite suffering an early setback with the injury to combative midfielder Luke Vester, the 2015 champions were simply unstoppable and the visitors simply had no response on the day.

In Tshwane, defending champions Tshwane University of Technology salvaged a late 1-1 draw against University of Pretoria in the Pretoria-Derby.

Lawrence Ntswane had nodded Tuks ahead early in the second-half but Themba Ndlovu’s 94th-minute free-kick from the edge of the area brought the home fans to their feet, as the sides shared the spoils in the evenly contested affair.

Like Wits, neighbours University of Johannesburg got off their campaign with a loss. The Orange army lost 1-0 to the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein at the CUT Stadium.

Mpho Molwatse’s deflected 66th-minute effort saw the home side avenge last season’s semi-final heartbreak against their Gauteng rivals.
