'The talent's there' - Man Utd legend Irwin offers Shaw support

The ex-Red Devils full-back believes the England international will be given an opportunity to secure his future despite being frozen out at present

Luke Shaw has time on his side at Manchester United and can still prove his worth to Jose Mourinho, says club legend Denis Irwin.

The England international has fallen out of favour this season, with a lack of opportunities seeing him slip to fourth choice at left-back behind Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo.

Neville: Criminal if Shaw doesn't succeed

He missed out on a place in the matchday squad for United’s EFL Cup triumph, with a standing in the shadows at Old Trafford becoming all too familiar.

Mourinho has spoken in the past of his desire to keep Shaw at United, but has also called on him to show what he is capable of following a difficult period on the injury front.

Why Mou's not sure about Shaw

Irwin is backing the 21-year-old to come good, with there still the potential in his game to nail down a regular role in the “most open” spot in the Red Devils side.

The former Republic of Ireland international, who won seven Premier League titles and the Champions League as part of 500-plus appearances for United, told talkSPORT on Shaw: "You've seen the talent's there, those first couple of months he was fantastic.

"It's up to the manager to decide when he wants to throw him in there.

"He's only a young lad and he's come back from a horrendous injury. It's been a bit of a battle this year to play left-back - you saw Darmian play quite a few games there, Blind has been very, very good at left-back, very consistent, Rojo played in the final on Sunday, there's competition there for Luke.

Scholes: Shaw disappointing at Utd

"All he can do is get his head down, work as hard as possible to impress the manager. He's only young so he's got time on his side.

"It looks like the position that's the most open in the team at the moment. I think everybody will be given an opportunity with the amount of games coming up."

Shaw has been restricted to just 14 appearances in all competitions this season, with only one FA Cup outing made since the end of November.
