Teenage American pair called up to Schalke first team

Schalke 04 manager Markus Weinzierl has announced that American pair Weston McKennie and Haji Wright have been promoted to the first team.

In his pre-match press conference leading up to the Bundesliga club's final league match of the season, Weinzierl said the duo would travel with the senior side on Saturday to face already-relegated Ingolstadt.

McKennie, 18, and Wright, 19, have impressed with Schalke's U-19 side this season and both are considered a big part of the Royal Blues' future plans.

Wright scored 12 goals in 21 matches for the club’s U-19 side this campaign, while McKennie netted four in 21 games.

Schalke did not allow the duo, along with fellow U-19 star Nick Taitague, to be a part of Tab Ramos' U-20 World Cup squad after being called up, much to the U.S. boss' chagrin.

The U.S. kicks off its World Cup campaign without the Schalke trio against Ecuador on May 22.
