Tembo says the victory over the Students on Tuesday night has revived Matsatsantsa's title aspirations

Following back-to-back defeats in the Tshwane Derby, SuperSport United had fallen by the wayside in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) title race.

However, Matsatsantsa bounced back on Tuesday night, as they earned a valuable three points. The victory against Bidvest Wits has potentially left SuperSport with a sniff at the title, despite the nine-point difference between them and log leaders Cape Town City.

The Tshwane side were dealt a blow in the build-up to Tuesday’s clash as coach Stuart Baxter was admitted for an emergency medical treatment, leaving assistant coach Kaitano Tembo to take over the coaching reins, on a caretaker basis.

After the game, Tembo was optimistic that SuperSport may still have an outside chance of winning the league, as they still have the Citizens and Kaizer Chiefs lying in wait.

“We dropped nine points in the last three matches,” Tembo told the media.

"And I think this also brings us back in the mix. We still have to play Cape Town City and Kaizer Chiefs‚ so anything is possible.

“But we’re happy that we managed to get the three points,” Tembo added.

Tembo also praised Baxter as the coach’s professionalism has made taking over the reins easier.

“I think our coach is a very professional man. And I think nothing had to change‚ because we do the same things on a daily basis. I know what he does. We communicate. So, it’s nothing new," he stressed.

“I don’t think his absence really affected the team‚ because he trusts us that we know what we’re supposed to be doing. And we plan with him as well,” Tembo concluded.
