The Reds legend believes the out-of-favour forward can find his scoring touch again to help Jurgen Klopp's side improve

The Liverpool legend Ian Rush has backed striker Daniel Sturridge to return to form and fire the Reds to a top-four finish.

Sturridge has scored just two Premier League goals this season after falling down the pecking order under manager Jurgen Klopp, the England international making just six league starts this term.

Lovren: My life as a refugee

Sturridge was linked with a move away from Anfield during the January transfer window but Rush, the two-times European Cup winner, believes the 27-year-old still has a part to play at Liverpool.

"Daniel Sturridge is probably the most gifted striker we have got," Rush told the Daily Mail.

"I was made up that he didn't go in January and I hope he is still here next year but you have got to fight for your place. I think he will fight for his place."

Sturridge's best season for Liverpool came in 2013-14 when he scored 21 league goals, but he has not replicated that form in recent campaigns.

He has scored six times in all competitions this season – four of those coming in the League Cup – but Rush believes the out-of-favour forward will get his chance in the first-team before the season ends.

Douglas Costa warned by Bayern

"One thing for certain this year is that we will need Daniel Sturridge and once he gets that chance he has to take it," Rush added.

"And when he does take it and starts scoring again I think he'll play a major part in Liverpool making the top four."
