The Glasgow giants could fall further behind in the race for the title if they fail to secure a win over the Saints at McDiarmid Park

Rangers will hope to close the gap between themselves and Celtic when they resume Scottish Premiership action against St Johnstone on Friday evening.

After a mixed start to the season, Pedro Caixinha's men are third in the league, trailing six points behind joint-leaders Celtic and Aberdeen, but they will attempt to narrow the deficit in Perth.

The Gers have interestingly endured most difficulty at home and with three of their four wins to date coming away, they will be confident of collecting three points against the Saints.

GAME PREVIEW

James Tavernier Rangers 2017

Rangers' meeting with Celtic at Ibrox before the international break showed that they remain some way behind their Glasgow rivals, but they rebounded from that disappointing 2-0 defeat by beating Hamilton Academical 4-1 in their subsequent fixture.

Caixinha has been subjected to plenty of criticism for his side's inconsistent start to the 2017-18 season - particularly their embarrassing exit from the Europa League qualifying rounds - but the Portuguese appears to be settling on his best team and they are gradually ironing out the proverbial kinks in their game.

Having already ceded ground to Celtic and Aberdeen, the Light Blues will be desperate to avoid further slipping behind in the race for the title because a loss in Perth could potentially see them drop as low as seventh, depending on results elsewhere.

Indeed, with a League Cup semi-final against Motherwell also on the horizon next week, Caixinha's men could do with gathering momentum to set their campaign off in the right direction.
