Bengal and Kerala are off to a flying start in their Santosh Trophy 2018 campaign which kicked off on Monday in Kolkata. While the reigning champions thrashed Manipur 3-0 at Howrah Stadium, the Southerners trounced Chandigarh 5-1 at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium.
Midfielder Sumit Das scored a brace for defending champions Bengal to guide his team to a comfortable win on home soil. Bidyasagar Singh scored the third goal.
Bengal completely dominated proceedings right from the word go against the Manipuris and found their opening goal as early as in the 7th minute of the match. Sumit doubled his tally and his team’s lead in the 15th minute from Bidyasagar Singh’s pass.
East Bengal youngster Bidyasagar scored the final goal in the 82nd minute, sealing the fate of the game.
In another match held at the Rabindra Sarobar stadium, a brilliant display from youngster Jithin M.S inspired Kerala to a memorable win over Chandigarh.
Kerala were in control of the game right from the beginning and threatened the Chandigarh defence every now and then. Their positive approach helped them secure the lead in the 11th Minute and got it doubled by the 18th minute.
The second half of the match saw three more goals from Kerala, out of which two were scored within the first six minutes. Jithin M.S scored a brace before leaving the pitch in the 65th minute. The youngster impressed with his performance on the flanks. His exuberance on the pitch was something which troubled Chandigarh all throughout. Vishal Sharma scored the consolation goal for Chandigarh in the 88th minute.
