Ex-FKF President Sam Nyamweya has lauded K'Ogalo for putting up a good fight against The Toffees in a friendly on Thursday

Former Football Kenya Federation President Sam Nyamweya has lauded Gor Mahia for putting up a good fight against Everton in a friendly played on Thursday.

The former Kenyan champions went down 2-1 with Wayne Rooney and Kieran Dowell scoring for The Toffees while Rwandan striker Jacques Tuyisenge managed a consolation for K'Ogalo. Nyamweya now says he was impressed by the performance of the Kenyan side despite losing in the fixture.

Wayne Rooney fouled by Kenneth Muguna

“I took my time on Thursday to watch the friendly between Gor Mahia and nine time English Premier League side Everton and I can say I was very impressed with what I saw especially from Gor Mahia.

“Many had expected Gor Mahia to be walked over by Everton who had big players like Wayne Rooney, Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines, Morgan Schneiderlin and Gareth Barry who have played at the highest level of football but it was never to be.”

Nyamweya added, “Gor Mahia were never overawed by the presence of Rooney. As a matter of fact, they made Rooney to struggle before scoring. When you look at the two teams, with an annual income of Sh 1 billion, Wayne Rooney alone earns 12 times the annual budget of Gor Mahia.

“Add that to the salaries of all the other players at Everton and you will see the gulf between the two teams.”

Nyamweya also credited SportPesa for their efforts to market and build Kenyan and East African football. “Without SportPesa, we would never have watched Wayne Rooney or any English club play against Kenyan clubs or players.

"It is my plea to the government to reconsider their tax on betting and lower it so that companies like SportPesa can continue investing in sports development.”
