Safa has confirmed they are investigating the eligibility of Mokotjo, following the player's decision to accept Dutch citizenship

FC Twente midfielder Kamohelo Mokotjo was recalled to the South African national team on Thursday, ahead of the upcoming friendlies.

However, the 25-year-old has reportedly accepted Dutch citizenship and under ordinary circumstances would mean forfeiting his South African nationality.

Bafana Bafana caretaker coach Owen Da Gama told the media that he was not aware of an issue with Mokotjo’s nationality.

Nonetheless, the South African Football Association (Safa) has confirmed that they are investigating the issue.

“I am looking into that, the guys assured me he can still play, even though he took another nationality, but I am trying to get hold of team management,” Safa ceo Dennis Mumble told Phakaaathi.

Due to a feud with former manager Shakes Mashaba, Mokotjo subsequently retired from international football. Mumble also stated that the Bafana management team should have consulted with the player before selecting him.

“I expected the coach and management would have spoken to him (Mokotjo) before calling him up,” Mumble added.

“We never retired him, that is the key thing. We are not done with players unless there are disciplinary issues. It is the coach’s prerogative (to select players) and the fact is that he (Mashaba) did call him but decided when he was going to play, and when he was not, and it turned out the way it did. We have a different coach in place now, so that coach has the prerogative to choose the players he want, there are no enemies of the association,” Mumble concluded.
