The Manchester United striker won his 100th cap in the 3-1 win over Slovenia on Saturday and admits he would regret a decision to retire early from international football

England captain Wayne Rooney insists he has no intention to retire early from international duty.

The Manchester United striker won his 100th cap on Saturday as England maintained their 100 per cent record in Euro 2016 qualifying with a 3-1 win over Slovenia. Rooney’s penalty cancelled out Jordan Henderson’s own goal before Danny Welbeck struck twice to seal the victory.

Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole opted to retire from international football this year but Rooney, after a conversation with his wife Coleen, admits he would find it hard to walk away - even if it prolonged his club career.

"A lot of the players I have played with other the last 10 years - Steven, Frank, Ashley, Rio [Ferdinand] - have retired from internationals," Rooney told reporters.

"When you get to a certain age, you almost feel like you have to do it, to extend your club career, but she [Coleen] was actually very good.

"She was the one who said to me: 'It's a short career, you have got plenty of time to have your time off with us as a family when you finish playing and you will regret it if you do [retire from international football].

"I obviously thought 'yes, I would'. Football is what I love doing. Playing for my country I love, I would regret it. I don't think I ever would walk away."
