Matano inherits a squad drooling from low self-esteem after the 2016 champions found themselves on 15th place

Robert Matano has promised to turn around the dwindling fortunes of Tusker after he was unveiled as the new coach, albeit on an interim basis.

Matano became the third coach in under five months to take over the hot seat at Rauraka following the unceremonious sacking of Ugandan Sam Timbe.

Timbe, who took over from compatriot George Nsimbe, won only two of his 11 league fixtures before he was shown the door alongside his assistant Francis Baraza.

Matano inherits a squad drooling from exceptionally low self esteem after the 2016 champions found themselves sitting just three places above the bottom.

But ‘The Lion’, who was sacked by AFC Leopards in March on grounds of poor performances, has pledged to turn things around after signing a season long deal with Tusker as an interim coach.

“I have done well everywhere I go. I am proud of my record because I am a successful coach,” a boastful Matano said adding that his immediate work will be to work on the mental as well as the psychological strength of is players.

“What most of these players lack at the moment Is the confidence’ and I have got to work on both the physical, psychological strength and the management must also prepare them well, financially.”

Matano will be assisted by Charles Okare, who admitted that joining Tusker is a big challenge.

“This is a big challenge but we have to deliver. It is all about understanding the categories of players you are working with,” said Okare, who managed most of the current Tusker players during the early development stages of their careers.

Matano's first assignment will be a league tie against Wazito on Wednesday.
