The 35-year-old has made Martin O'Neill's final 23 man panel for Euro 2016, despite concerns over his fitness

Martin O'Neill has announced his final Republic of Ireland squad for the European Championship, naming record goalscorer Robbie Keane in his 23-man panel for the tournament.

Keane was a doubt for the Boys in Green, having missed both of their warm-up friendlies through injury, but has been included despite concerns over his fitness.

James McCarthy is also an injury doubt for Ireland, but O'Neill has decided to name the Everton midfielder in his final squad.

"Robbie's the captain of the side and feels he's going to be fit. James McCarthy did some work on his own today," O'Neill told reporters at Turner's Cross after revealing his panel.

"[Keane] thinks he'll be fit for Sweden, if not then he'll be ready for the second game.

"These decisions are tough because these lads want to play for their country. That's the big decision."

Ipswich Town striker Daryl Murphy will travel to France ahead of clubmate David McGoldrick, while Stephen Quinn and David Meyler are both named after playing against Netherlands and Belarus respectively.

David Forde has been omitted in favour of Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood, while Bournemouth duo Eunan O'Kane and Harry Arter are also absentees.

Darron Gibson and Callum O'Dowda have also been cut from O'Neill's provisional squad. Colorado Rapids attacker Kevin Doyle was left out of the squad earlier in the week and will not travel to France, where Ireland take on Sweden, Belgium, and Italy.
