The former Premier League and U.S. national team shot-stopper takes over the Revs for his first professional coaching position

The New England Revolution have named former U.S. national team goalkeeper Brad Friedel as the club's head coach.

As Goal reported earlier this week, the 46-year-old will take over for Jay Heaps, who was fired towards the end of a disappointing 2017 campaign for the Revs.

The Revs will be Friedel's first professional head coaching job after the former Liverpool, Blackburn and Aston Villa keeper spent the past two years coaching the U.S. Under-19 national team and working as a television analyst for Fox.

"My staff and I are delighted and honored to have been hired by the New England Revolution," Friedel said in a club release.

"I can guarantee that we, the staff and players, will give 100 percent commitment to the club and our fans while looking forward to all the challenges ahead. We can't wait to get started right away building this club for the 2018 season."

Friedel earned 82 caps for the U.S. in his career and made 450 Premier League appearances – the most ever by an American and third most among all goalkeepers.

"While Brad's professional playing pedigree speaks for itself, it is his competitive character and commitment to winning that make me confident his incredible career as a player will translate to success here in New England," Revolution general manager Michael Burns said.

"He demands the best out of himself and his players and has a strong presence both in the locker room and on the sidelines, which is why we believe he is the best choice to lead the Revolution."
