Wayne Rooney looks set to call time on his Manchester United career by sealing a return to Everton this summer.
Rooney's departure from Old Trafford means that United are looking for a new captain ahead of the forthcoming campaign, with the 31-year-old star set to relinquish the captain's armband that he was given by Louis van Gaal back in 2014.
Another United stalwart - midfielder Michael Carrick - is the leading contender to take on captaincy duties, with Paddy Power offering just 1/4 (1.25) that the veteran is made captain by Jose Mourinho.
Carrick would certainly be a popular choice with the Manchester United faithful. The former England midfielder has been at Old Trafford for 11 years, having joined the club back in 2006, while the 35-year-old enjoyed a testimonial with United earlier this summer.
Ander Herrera has won many admirers amongst the United support with committed performances since moving to Old Trafford three years ago and the Spain international is the 7/2 (4.50) second favourite to take up the captaincy in the event of Rooney's, seemingly imminent, departure.
Antonio Valencia, who captained the team in the Europa League final against Ajax Amsterdam in Stockholm back in May, is an 8/1 (9.0) chance to be handed the captain's armband this summer, with 8/1 (9.0) that it is Paul Pogba who is named as Rooney's successor by Mourinho.
Pogba, of course, began his career at Manchester United and returned to Old Trafford last year after completing a move from Juventus for a world record fee. As such, it may make sense for Mourinho to underline the importance of Pogba to his plans by naming the France international as club captain ahead of the forthcoming campaign.
David de Gea, too, is a valuable asset as Mourinho looks to build a squad capable of mounting a credible challenge for the Premier League title next season and the Spanish stopper is rated as a 16/1 (17.0) shot to be appointed as United's next captain.
It would, however, be something of a surprise should Michael Carrick be overlooked for the role and the 1/4 (1.25) quote for him to be named as Manchester United's captain is indicative that the veteran midfielder appears to be the prime candidate to be handed the captain's armband ahead of next month's big kick-off.
