The Glory rebuild under Popovic continues to look impressive

Perth Glory has continued their impressive recruiting spree under new coach Tony Popovic, signing Socceroo defender Jason Davidson on a one-year deal.

The 27-year-old spent last season on the books of Croatia's Rijeka, but was loaned out to Slovenia's Olimpija Ljubljana, where he helped the club to a league and cup double.

"Jason is another high-quality, Australian defender who has forged a very successful career overseas and we beat off stiff competition from a host of clubs both here and overseas in order to sign him,” Glory football director Jacob Burns said.

"He brings great ability, athleticism and a winning mentality."

The signing of Davidson completes a quartet of impressive defensive acquistions by Popovic, including Matthew Spiranovic, Ivan Franjic and Tomislav Mrcela.

Davidson, who has 23 Australian caps, played all three games for the Socceroos at the 2014 World Cup and scored the clinching goal in the 2015 Asian Cup semi-final win against the UAE - but hasn't played for his nation since November 2015.

His club career peaked in 2014-15 when he played two Premier League games for West Bromwich Albion after a earning a move from Dutch Eredivisie club Heracles Almelo.

Perth Glory are preparing for a high-profile friendly match against English giants Chelsea at Optus Stadium on Monday July 23.
