Palacios eager to end Orlando Pirates stint on a high

Palacios tells Goal that they will go into their latest PSL clash with Cape Town City eager to end their barren run of results

Orlando Pirates interim coach Augusto Palacios  says they have to give their new permanent head coach a nice welcome with a victory over PSL title-chasing club Cape Town City.

“I am 22 years at the club and I have never wanted the team to lose. I always do my best for the club and I have won the league with the first-team,” Palacios told Goal.

Bucs are on a seven game winless run in the league - with their last win coming away to Chippa United last November.

This has led to many the Bucs faithful calling for the head of Palacios - with the club set to announce his successor on Monday.

“These things happen in football. Look at Leicester City. They are the champions in England and are now fighting relegation. Why is that?

“You just need to encourage your players because sometimes clubs have a good season and a bad one. We need to motivate the players before the new coach comes so that the new coach must have a good welcome therefore it’s important to win the last game,” Palacios explained.

Their latest defeat came at the hands of Bidvest Wits on Wednesday when they went down 2-1 at home in the aftermath of their 6-0 thrashing of Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 65-year-old insists that they do not deliberately play matches with the sole intention of losing them.

“Results in football can go either way. Look at Cape Town City they lost 4-0 to Platinum Stars (in December) at home and Sundowns lost 3-0 to Wits (in the MTN 8 final)," he stressed.

“So this is football, these things happen. We are not playing to lose,” Palacios concluded.
