Pachuca sign Japan international Honda after AC Milan exit

The 31-year-old midfielder has made his move to the Liga MX side, spurning interest from elsewhere, including MLS

Keisuke Honda has signed with Liga MX side Pachuca, the club announced Friday.

The 31-year-old was a free agent after his contract with AC Milan expired in June. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Honda had been linked with multiple leagues as his departure neared, including rumors of interest from teams in Major League Soccer as he trained in the United States.

However, while Honda has made the move to North America, it will be with the current CONCACAF Champions League title holders Pachuca, rather than a side in the U.S. league.

Pachuca, which will compete in the Club World Cup this year as a result of that CONCACAF CL win, had previously lost winger Hirving Lozano to PSV Eindhoven earlier in the summer. Honda may be a like-for-like replacement, though in the past he has indicated he would have preferred to play the No.10 role more for Milan.

Honda, who has been capped 90 times by Japan, spent three and a half years with Milan after moving from CSKA Moscow in January 2014. While he featured heavily in his first three campaigns in Italy, he made just eight appearances in Serie A last season.

The midfielder has also played for VVV Venlo in Netherlands and Grampus in his native Japan.
