NFD Week 20 Review: Highlands go eight points clear, Tshakuma move to second spot

Goal takes a look at the National First Division (NFD) match day 20 results

Runaway NFD leaders, Highlands Park, and promotion candidates, Black Leopards, both earned convincing 4-0 wins over relegation threatened sides Royal Eagles and Ubuntu Cape Town. Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC earned second spot after beating Mthatha Bucks 1-0.

Moving on, fomer Premier Soccer League (PSL) club University of Pretoria registered their first win in 2018, also Witbank Spurs, Mbombela United and Stellenbosch won their games as well.

Highlands Park, who are coached by former South Africa assistant coach Owen Da Gama, secured a 4-0 win over Royal Eagles came through goals from Chris Komane, Mothobi Mvalo, Sphiwe Mahlangu and Thabo Motlafi. The win saw the log leaders stretching their lead at the top up to 8-points.

Lidoda Duvha jumped to 6th place after smashing Ubuntu Cape Town 4-0. The four goals came courtesy of Karabo Tshepe (2), Joseph Mhlongo and Meshack Maphangule which left Ubuntu moving to the bottom of the table. On the other hand, TTM FC moved to 2nd place after Themba Ndlovu’s winner against Mthatha Bucks.

AmaTuks' winning goal against forner PSL side Jomo Cosmos came via Ritchi Sebastiao scored a late goal to boost Shaun Bartlett’s team of reviving their late faint promotion aspirations.

Witbank Spurs strengthened their promotion chances after beating in-form Real Kings 2-1 at home through finishes from Thabo Makhele and Quentin Debuoto, whilst Kings scored a goal through Lindokuhle Mtshali.

Mbombela United and Stellenbosch FC earned key 1-0 wins over Super Eagles and Uthongathi respectively. Richards Bay and Cape Town All Stars succumbed to a goalless draw.

With two-thirds of the season complete, and the final stretch in front of us, the final 10 games of the season promise to be season-defining games. Only five points separate 2nd spot and 9th spot, which means the promotion battle, is still tight and hard to call.
